Red-figure pottery, ancient Greek ceramic art that flourished from the late 6th to the late 4th century BC. The technique of red-figure pottery involves painting figures in black against a red background, reversing the older black-figure technique in which figures were painted in black on a red background. This technique allowed for greater detail and expression in the figures and facilitated the depiction of three-dimensional form. Many of the scenes depicted on red-figure pottery were mythological or legendary in nature, providing valuable insight into ancient Greek culture and beliefs. Red-figure pottery was popular in Athens and was produced in large quantities for both domestic and export markets. The most famous examples of red-figure pottery are the vases produced by the Athenian workshop of the potter and artist, Exekias.
